This proposition explores the history of the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu bridges through a meditation on materials, their evolution, and the role of human creativity and technical skill. At the heart of any great structural work are two key elements: the available raw materials and the techniques developed to transform them.
A bridge is the ultimate expression of human genius. For this very reason, it clearly distinguishes itself throughout history, both in its composition and its assembly. The proposed artwork schematically illustrates four materials representing the existing bridges. It does so in a reflective manner, turning the viewer’s gaze back onto themselves and emphasizing the central role of humanity.
I use 3D technology to simulate the deformation of materials. In this process, the material is treated as if it were old, with high parameters for flexibility and malleability. The final piece is the result of multiple simulations where I adjusted parameters and variables to find not only the desired form but also to capture a dynamic, frozen moment in time.
The finished piece conveys a sense of instability and precariousness. You can feel the tension and dynamism of an object in motion—a balance of force and material that recalls its source of inspiration.
